URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE National Weather Service Topeka KS 225 PM CST Thu Jan 2 2025 ...WINTER STORM WATCH NOW IN EFFECT FROM SATURDAY MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY EVENING... * WHAT...Heavy mixed precipitation possible. Total snow accumulations between 4 and 11 inches, sleet accumulations around one quarter of an inch, and ice accumulations up to one half of an inch possible. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph. * WHERE...Portions of central, east central, north central, and northeast Kansas. * WHEN...From Saturday morning through Sunday evening. * IMPACTS...Roads will likely become slick and hazardous. Whiteout conditions are possible and may make travel treacherous if not impossible and potentially life-threatening. Power outages and tree damage are likely due to snow, ice and strong wind gusts. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Monitor the latest forecasts for updates on this situation. Persons should delay all travel if possible. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility. Leave plenty of room between you and the motorist ahead of you, and allow extra time to reach your destination. Avoid sudden braking or acceleration, and be especially cautious on hills or when making turns. Make sure your car is winterized and in good working order. Consider taking a winter storm kit along with you, including such items as tire chains, booster cables, flashlight, shovel, blankets and extra clothing. Also take water, a first aid kit, and anything else that would help you survive in case you become stranded.
